NEW The Breakup: Why Ireland Is No Longer the Vatican's Loyal Follower

COMMENT:
Laity are Bystanders No More......
Far from winding down, this crisis blossoms. The next generation will not look toward the hierarchy for moral authority.  In this article, the Catholic lay leaders give voice.....this is not anti Catholic-it is anti hierarchy.....because they have refused to lead us, protect our children or bend in sorrow for their misdeeds.

The Breakup: Why Ireland Is No Longer the Vatican's Loyal Follower

Indeed, Kenny's attack carries more weight for ordinary Irish Catholics because he leads the traditionally staunchly Catholic party Fine Gael. "It was not an anti-Catholic speech, but was pro-children and pro-Ireland," Madden says. "The fact that his speech will probably not lose Kenny a single vote — but will most likely gain him some — is a sign of a shift from excessive deference in political circles and wider culture," Says Michael Kelly, deputy editor of the Irish Catholic newspaper. Thanks to more than a decade of horrific abuse scandals, the Vatican's power over ordinary Irish Catholics has grown weaker and weaker. "There has been an absolute loss of moral authority for the Church, and Catholics will increasingly privatize their faith — keeping their distance from and not looking to the hierarchy as previous generations did," Kelly says.(See why the Pope's apology may not be enough.)

“Holy Shakeup: Catholic Clergy and Hierarchy Join Catholics Worldwide in Support of Women Priests”

The Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests rejoice in a “holy shakeup” that millions of Catholics worldwide welcome. The good news now is that male priests, bishops, a cardinal as well as theologians have expressed their support of female priests. They are following in the footsteps of Maryknoll Roy Bourgeois whose prophetic call for a dialogue on women priests is being heard in more and more places today in our church.

A new documentary, Pink Smoke Over the Vatican , shares the stories of some of these women who have found a way to serve God’s people as women priests including Janice Sevre-Duszynska who was ordained in Lexington, Kentucky in 2008. Fr. Roy Bourgeois attended, delivered the homily and participated in the ordination rite. This resulted in his excommunication and Vatican attempts to pressure Maryknoll to dismiss him from the Order.

"Nothing can stop the movement of the spirit toward human rights, justice and equality in our world and in our church" said Bridget Mary Meehan, "the full equality of women is the voice of
God in our time."

Here is a list of top church leaders who have joined the wave of enthusiasm for female priests:

---Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo of Lisbon, Portugal has said there's "no fundamental theological obstacle" to the ordination of women as priests in the Catholic Church.
http://www.cathnews.com/article.aspx?aeid=26981

---300 Austrian priests issued a "Call to Disobedience" to promote priesthood for women and married men. The Austrian priests and deacons read aloud a public prayer for "church reform" in every Mass.

---Over 250 German speaking theologians called for end to celibacy and for women's ordination in the Roman Catholic Church..

---Over 150 Catholic priests have signed on to a letter in support of Maryknoll priest, Fr. Roy Bourgeois, who has been told to recant his support for women's ordination or be removed from the priesthood. The letter that affirms primacy of conscience was delivered, Friday, July 22nd, to Fr. Edward Dougherty, Superior General of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in Maryknoll, NY.

---Bishop Markus Buchel, bishop of the diocese of St. Gall in Switzerland spoke out openly for women's ordination on Easter Sunday/2011 in an explosive statement in the St. Galler Pfarreiblatt [St. Gall Parish Paper]. He said:: "We must search for steps that lead there," "I could imagine that women's diaconate could be such a step."Regarding priesthood for women, Büchel said, "We can pray that the Holy Spirit enables us to read the signs of the times."
http://www.praytellblog.com/index.php/2011/04/24/swiss-catholic-bishop-speaks-out-for-womens-ordination/
--- Bishop William Morris, from Australia, was forced to resign by the Vatican for wanting to discuss married priests and women priests as a possible response to the shortage of priests. The National Council of Priests of Australia released a statement in support of Bishop Morris. http://www.catholicnetwork.us/calls-for-reform/priests-support-bishop-sacked-by-vatican/

----A male priest co-celebrated the ordination liturgy of Marta Soto, the first woman priest ordained in Latin America.
http://bridgetmarys.blogspot.com/2011/03/making-history-again-first-woman.html

--- Women priests continue to grow. The Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests will ordain 3 women in the first ordinations in Virginia on Sept. 10, 2011. .
-- The Vatican is in free fall. On July 20, 2011, Prime Minister of Ireland, Enda Kenny accused the Vatican of covering up child- sexual abuse allegations against clergy and of "downplaying" the "rape and torture of children" to uphold its reputation and referred to the "dysfunction, disconnection and elitism, the narcissism that dominates the culture of the Vatican to this day.”http://www.catholicnetwork.us/calls-for-reform/priests-support-bishop-sacked-by-vatican/

Women priests are a holy shakeup that offer a renewed priestly ministry of living the Gospel of justice for all and justice for women in the church! Now our brothers in the Catholic clergy and hierarchy are joining us as companions on the journey.
The Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests is in the United States and Latin America.

Pope Benedict’s War on the Church | Religion Dispatches

Comment:
The following interview of Mathew Fox about his latest book, Pope Benedict's war on the Church by  Candace Chellew-Hodge. offers insight into the political motivation of the Vatican to establish a "Catholic" identity the conforms to defined notions set from the 11th century and beyond.  Fox states that European theologians, as well as many others, believe the present Vatican is schismatic, because they are not adhering to the dictates of the Holy Spirit as expressed through Vatican II. The interview is clear and the book astounding.  For all interested in reform of Catholicism, it is a must read.

What You Won't Hear in Your Parish

Oakland, CA - April 7, 2010 - Fr. Tim Stier speaks up: Five years ago, March 15, 2005, while on sabbatical after 25 years of ministry as a priest in five parishes in the Diocese of Oakland, California, I met with my bishop, Allen Vigneron, and informed him I was choosing voluntary exile from active priesthood until he was willing to initiate a public dialogue about clergy sexual abuse, the exclusion of women from the priesthood, and doctrinal and actual discrimination against gay persons.  Because I was refusing an assignment, I stopped receiving a salary, health insurance and retirement accrual.
.........
As for my fellow priests and why we don’t hear from many of them about this crisis, they tend to place obedience to their bishop ahead of the protection of children, full inclusion of women, and justice and respect for gay persons.

Comment:  To answer this question- they, your fellow priests, are not willing to be put in your position Fr. Tim.....no salary, health insurance and retirement.....if laity could attend to and solve this problem...many more would speak truth to power!  God bless you Fr. Tim....Thank you Richard Sipe for continuing to hold the flame high so I can see.

300 brave priests stepping out in Austria -from Andrea Johnson

John Wijngaards points to some exciting news from Austria where 300 parish priests are openly refusing to comply because of the Church's lack of reform. They call for 'disobedience' in seven key areas. See: http://www.pfarrer-initiative.at/
The seven points are: (John has translated & summarised from the German text):
·         In every Church service they will say a public prayer for Church reform.
·         They will not refuse communion to well-meaning Christians. These may include divorced and remarried, members of other Churches, at times people who have left the Church.
·         They will avoid saying multiple masses in many centres. They will prefer services conducted by people themselves to artificial supply services.
·         From now on they will call a service of the word with distribution of holy communion a 'eucharistic celebration without a priest'. This will fulfil the Sunday duty.
·         They will ignore the preaching prohibition imposed on competent lay people.
·         They will see to it that each parish has a lay chairperson: a man or woman, married or not. This to counter the joining up of parishes and of projecting a new priestly image.
·         (MOST INTERESTING!) They will use every opportunity to publicly promote the admission of women and married men and women to the priestly ministry -- seeing in both men and women welcome colleagues in our pastoral ministry.

Sending my love and blessings,
Therese

A West Long Branch Catholic church separates from Diocese of Trenton

A West Long Branch Catholic church's decision to separate from Diocese of Trenton causes controversy

Published: Saturday, June 25, 2011, 6:00 PM     Updated: Saturday, June 25, 2011, 6:18 PM
Bob Considine/The Star-Ledger
trentonreligion.JPGBishop David O'Connell of the Diocese of Trenton emerges from St. Mary of the Lake RC Church in the January file photo.
TRENTON — The Diocese of Trenton says a new Catholic church striking out on its own is illegitimate and fractures the institution.
But leaders of independent churches say they are providing a worthy alternative to parishioners unified with the same faith, but the feeling that the traditional Roman Catholic church is too hypocritical, selective in its acceptance and set in its ways.
Now it remains to be whether the American National Catholic Church - a band of six parishes that preaches a more modern form of Catholicism - will become a major movement.
"For us, it’s not about taking people away from their heart’s desire," said Most Rev. George Lucey, residing bishop of the ANCC and pastor of the independent St. Francis of Assisi in Glen Ridge.
"It’s about our belief that when God changed water into wine, he didn’t say, ‘You can have it, but you can’t."
A spotlight was drawn to rogue Catholic churches on Friday when the Most Rev. David M. O’Connell, bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, released a 1,500-word statement chastising the Our Lady of Guadalupe church in West Long Branch for separating from the diocese.
The church is made up mostly of Hispanic and Portuguese members who felt displaced when the diocese consolidated three parishes into one Long Branch-based church called Christ the King in 2009.
In seeking its independence, Our Lady of Guadalupe became one of six parishes to join the ANCC. The others are in Maryland, Missouri, Connecticut and Virginia. O’Connell called members of the church "schismatics" who refuse or reject the unity of the Roman Catholic Church.
"Although claiming legitimacy as an ‘alternative’ or ‘independent’ Catholic Church, this group and the individuals leading or promoting it are not in communion with the Roman Catholic Church," O’Connell said. "No Catholic Church is independent."
Rev. Anthony Testa, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, was officiating a wedding yesterday, according to parish administrator Joyce Sprague, and could not be reached for comment. Sprague referred all calls to Lucey.
O’Connell maintained that the Christ the King parish actually did extend a "warm welcome" to all members of the merged parishes and offered ministry in Spanish and Portuguese. The bishop said his greatest fear is that the church and the ANCC will "take other well-intentioned Catholics down with them, leading them away from the true practice of their faith under the pretense of legitimacy."
But Lucey said domination is the not the goal and his organization doesn’t "relish the schism." It only wants to offer an alternative for Catholics who find fault with some of the Vatican’s rules and methods.
Specifically, Lucey cited large issues like the church’s handling of sexual abuse cases, refusal to remarry parishioners who have already been divorced, refusal to allow priests to marry and stance against gay marriage.
Lucey said his parish currently has about 500 members, 100 who are "active."
"We’re trying to extend to the people of God, that Christ called everybody, not just some of us," he said. "The greatest number of unaffiliated Christians are now Catholics who are leaving the church. We just want to find a way to say, ‘You don’t have to.’
But O’Connell said that Christianity is a "comfort and challenge" and the thousands of years of belief and tradition cannot be splintered.
"When we decide that we can privately discern the teaching of Christ without the guidance of the church and her experience, we separate ourselves from the community of Christ’s faithful people."
